TYPHOON HITS THE PHILIPPINES AGAIN

It is a beautiful sunshiny day here in Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines.  Yet, our brothers and sisters in Luzon are experiencing the strength of typhoon Juan or Megi - as called internationally.  Despite experiencing a short heavy, windy rain yesterday here in our place, we had a good night's sleep, and just waking up to find out in the news that 7 were found killed because of this latest typhoon.

Philippines is regularly visited by typhoons (20 to 21 annually) and most of the time, residents in Luzon and Visayas are hit.  Luckily, we live in a place that's hit with not much typhoons - Mindanao.  We have other problems though.

But I just noticed since typhoon Ondoy and the first major flood here in Cagayan de Oro in 2009 that in the event of even a tropical storm depression or low pressure area ( they call it) with rain pouring for 8 to 24 hours, it would start flooding in the downtown area. Luckily again, our house is in the uptown area - the Lord is just so good to us.

This time under our new President, a lot of public and private organizations were already prepared.  It was very different before since we are not even warned of a typhoon.  It was just recently that people became involved especially during disasters like this. Hope this will be a start of a Philippine Republic, changing for the better.

Sportswriters Association of Cebu (SAC) president John Pages and Meyrick Jacalan of ASAP Promotions have come up with a better way of preventing technical errors from happening in future racing events here in Cebu.

Pages and Jacalan have formed a business group composed of other sports enthusiasts in Cebu called Sprint Race Timers which is equipped with the latest timing technology available for unsurpassed accuracy.

Their group offers race timing chips system capable of capturing accurate real times covering cycling, triathlon, boat racing, kayaking and even car racing as well as running.

Jacalan said that their technology will be a first in Asia.

“Nahangyo namo ang manufacturer aning technology sa US mao nang kami naka-una ani sa Asia, ang Korea ug Taiwan wala man na aprubahan,” Jacalan said.

They are aiming to compete against Metro Manila's leading timing chips system companies which are very expensive. Timing chips from Manila have been used three times in Cebu during the Grand Cebu Marathon, Great Lapu-lapu Run and the Aboitiz Race to Reduce.

“We are very excited to offer this to the running community here in Cebu,” Pages said.

The system is called UHF Gen 2 Technology and is touted to be far more accurate.

“It's far more accurate than the system from Manila because it can read multiple chips at the same time and give real time results to the organizers and runners,” Jacalan said.

Jacalan and Pages imported the technology from Alien Technology, a global company based in the United States. Their system is equipped with four antennas to read the timing chips passing through it at the finish line replacing the mat placed on the ground.

The timing chips are disposable, re-usable, water and sweat proof and is user-friendly since they are made from sticker-like material which runners can stick into their race bibs, ankles, helmets and shoes.

The technology's key features are real time report of the runners’ current time and split times, live results, wireless networking that communicates to websites for updates and immediate time results for all finishers.

A runner will only pay P250 for use of their timing chips compared to Manila's P500 registration fee while organizers will only shell out P40,000 to avail of their technology which is P10,000 lesser than those from Manila.

Cebu Spring Race Timers of Jacalan and Pages, bought three timing chips from Alien Technology. The technology will make its debut in the 2011 Cebu Marathon.
